Dhanteras 2026 (6 November): Which Utensils to Buy and Why

Dhanteras 2026 Date
Dhanteras falls on Friday, 6 November 2026, two days before Diwali (Sunday, 8 November). Dhanteras puja is done in the evening, during Pradosh Kaal — the exact muhurat changes from city to city, so check your local panchang.
Why Do We Buy Utensils on Dhanteras?
According to tradition, Lord Dhanvantari appeared during the Samudra Manthan holding a kalash (pot) of amrit. That is why bringing home a new vessel — a new bartan — on Dhanteras is considered auspicious, a way of welcoming health and prosperity into the home before Diwali. Gold and silver are bought too, but for most families a new metal utensil is the heart of Dhanteras shopping.
Many families also follow the custom of not bringing a vessel home empty — they fill it with water, grain or sweets when they first bring it in.

What Many Families Avoid on Dhanteras
These are traditions and beliefs, followed differently in different homes:
- Sharp objects such as knives and scissors
- Iron items
- Black-coloured items
- Bringing home an empty vessel (fill it first)
If your family follows these customs, brass, copper, kansa and stainless steel are all popular Dhanteras choices.
