What is a Pipda? The Complete Guide to Stainless Steel Storage Drums

Published: April 20267 min readKitchen Storage Guide

If you have grown up in a Gujarati or Indian household, you have almost certainly seen a pipda — that large, cylindrical metal container used to store wheat flour, rice, or water. But what exactly is it, what is the correct English name, and how do you choose the right one? This guide covers everything.

Quick Summary

  • • Pipda = Stainless Steel Storage Drum / Airtight Container in English
  • • Used for storing grain, flour, pulses, water and dry foods
  • • Available in sizes from 10 litres to 100+ litres
  • • Best material: food-grade 304-grade stainless steel
  • • Key feature to check: silicone-sealed airtight lid

Pipda in English — What Do You Call It?

The word pipda (પીપડા in Gujarati, पीपड़ा in Hindi) translates to a stainless steel storage drum or airtight storage canister in English. In commercial contexts, it is also called a grain storage container, bulk food drum, or simply steel drum container.

In Western countries, a similar vessel is called a food-grade storage barrel or stainless steel canister. The Indian pipda is typically taller relative to its diameter and features a tight-fitting lid with a sealing ring — making it superior for Indian household storage needs.

What is a Pipda Used For?

Grain & Flour Storage

The most common use — storing 10–50kg of wheat flour (atta), rice, jowar, bajra, or maize. The airtight lid keeps moisture and pests out.

Pulse & Lentil Storage

Storing moong, toor, chana, and other dals in bulk. A 30-litre pipda holds approximately 25–30 kg of pulses.

Water Storage

Large 50–100 litre pipdas are used for storing drinking water, especially in areas with irregular water supply.

Sugar & Spice Storage

Medium-size pipdas (10–15 litres) are ideal for storing sugar, salt, and whole spices in large quantities.

Restaurant & Hotel Use

Commercial kitchens use 60–100 litre pipdas to store bulk ingredients. Hygienic and stackable — ideal for kitchen stores.

Oil & Ghee Storage

Stainless steel pipdas are food-grade and non-reactive — safe for storing cooking oil and ghee for extended periods.

How to Choose a Good Pipda — 5 Things to Check

  1. Food-grade stainless steel: Ensure it is made from 304-grade (18/8) stainless steel — this is food-safe and rust-resistant. Avoid low-grade steel that may corrode.
  2. Silicone-sealed lid: The lid must have a food-grade silicone gasket ring to create an airtight, leak-proof seal. This is the most important feature for keeping grain pest-free.
  3. Sturdy handles: A good pipda has reinforced handles on the sides for safe carrying when full — especially important for 30L+ sizes.
  4. Gauge thickness: Thicker steel (heavier weight) means better durability. A 30L pipda should weigh at least 2–3 kg empty.
  5. Lid locking mechanism: Some pipdas have a locking lid (screw-top or clip-lock) for extra security. This is recommended for water storage and for households with children.
